PCOS - Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder affecting 5 - 10% of women of childbearing age. PCOS is characterised by higher-than-normal levels of male hormones (androgens) in the bloodstream, and by the development of fluid-filled cysts inside the ovaries. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome can interrupt a woman’s menstrual cycle, causing irregular periods or absent periods and, in many cases, infertility.

Dr Cui has successfully treated women suffering from PCOS with Acupuncture. Acupuncture is particularly effective in less severe cases of PCOS, where there are no additional chronic health issues. Acupuncture can also alleviate some of the other symptoms of PCOS, such as weight gain, bloating and headaches.

Women with PCOS have needles placed along the Acupuncture meridians that are related to the reproductive system. This helps to stimulate the organs and improve blood flow to the area, normalising hormone levels and promoting the proper functioning of the reproductive system. It has been clinically shown that Acupuncture in combination with Chinese herbal medicine can significantly improve the chances of conception in women who suffer from PCOS

Teenage girls & PCOS

Of the up to 10% of women suffering from PCOS, teenage girls make up a large part, perhaps as high as 50% according to recent research in the US. More often than not, Western medicine treats adolescent PCOS with the birth control pill, which can have long-term side effects, impacting on fertility, as well as the other well-known health issues.

Dr Cui believes Acupuncture offers an alternative treatment for PCOS in teenagers, avoiding the potential side effects of taking the birth control pill from an early age.
