Studies on IVF and acupuncture In Germany, a study was conducted on 160 IVF patients randomly assigned to two groups. One group received acupuncture during the IVF process while the other group had no acupuncture. The study shows that adding acupuncture to the IVF treatment protocol may increase the chances of conceiving by nearly 50%. In this study, IVF patients who had acupuncture had a 42.5% pregnancy rate (34/80). IVF patients who did not have acupuncture had a 26.3% success rate (21/80). (Fertility and Sterility, 2002.)

Furthermore, Acupuncture has also been shown to stimulate follicle development in women undergoing IVF. A small study of 6 women who had difficulty with follicle production (despite maximum gonadotropin therapy), shown that three of the women produced more ovarian follicles with acupuncture treatment and all 3 conceived. (Emmons et al, 2000).

Acupuncture may help some men overcome infertility problems by improving the quality of their sperms, according to a new study.
Published: Aug. 2005
They say the results suggest that acupuncture may complement traditional infertility treatment and help man reach their full reproductive potential. Researchers analyzed sperm samples at the beginning and end of the study and found significant improvements in sperm quality in the acupuncture group compared with other group.
Acupuncture treatment was associated with fewer structural defects in the sperm and increase in the number of normal sperm in ejaculate. The researchers write that acupuncture treatment is a simple, noninvasive method that can improve sperm quality.
